Feliciano Lopez ended his week in the best manner possible at the Fever-Tree Championships: the Spanish completed a dream run to the title in singles and doubles, partnering Andy Murray in his 2019 comeback tournament. Lopez jumps 60 positions in the ATP Rankings to No. 53, his highest position since spending his last day in the No. 37 spot exactly one year ago.
The 37-year-old Lopez won a battle of veterans by ousting Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-6(2). Lopez has a track record of success at The Queen’s Club, winning there in 2017 (d. Cilic) and finishing runner-up in 2014 (l. to Dimitrov).
“I thought the best moment of my career was when I won this tournament in 2017, but it’s right now,” said Lopez. Four of Lopez’s seven ATP Tour titles have come on grass.
Lopez and Murray won the doubles title with a 7-6(6), 5-7, 10-5 win over Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. “This happens maybe only once in a lifetime. I can’t believe it,” said Lopez.
The 37-year-old Lopez became the oldest champion at the Fever-Tree Championships in the Open Era and the first wild card to lift the trophy at The Queen’s Club since Pete Sampras in 1999. The Spaniard also became the first player since Mark Philippoussis in 1997 to win both titles in the same year.
