UGO HUMBERT WINS THE EUROPEAN OPEN

Ugo Humbert (ATP 38), competed in the final of the European Open against Australian Alex De Minaur (ATP 29). The Frenchman defeated De Minaur in two sets (6/1, 7/6 ).

The 22-year-old Humbert won against the Australian Alex De Minaur. Writing his second ATP Tour victory to his name. In the first set, Humbert was soon able to go through his opponent’s serve and build up a comfortable lead. The Australian could not fight back in the first set and had to give in with 1/6. In the second set, on the other hand, the Australian managed to keep his serve for a long time. With a score of 6/6, De Minaur had to win the tie-break to extend the match and still have a chance to win. He failed and lost the tie-break by 7/4. This makes Ugo Humbert the new winner of the European Open 2020.

Earlier this season Humbert won the ATP tournament of Auckland. He is the fourth Frenchman to reach the final at the European Open. With his 21 years, he is the youngest Frenchman together with Gasquet to win an ATP tournament. “I am very happy with this victory. I was always at my best on the crucial points and this week I have shown myself mentally super strong.”

For Alex De Minaur, it is the first final of the season. He played his previous final in Basel and lost to the Swiss Roger Federer. To reach the final in the European open he already knocked out the former champion of 2016, Richard Gasquet. After the final De Minaur said, “I got a few chances but Ugo was really too strong today”.
