At just 21 years of age, Casper won the 20th edition of South America’s most prestigious and enduring tournament by beating Portugal’s Pedro Sousa 6-1, 6-4. In doubles, Horacio Zeballos became the maximum winner, with four titles, by defeating the Argentines Guillermo Durán and Juan Ignacio Londero together with the Spanish Marcel Granollers.
Casper Ruud , the 21-year-old Norwegian, had his first magical week on the ATP Tour when he completed the job and beat Portugal’s Pedro Sousa 6-1, 6-4 to win the traditional mate, the Argentina Open championship trophy. This is the most prestigious and valid competition in South America, organized by Tennium , in its 20 years of existence.
“Many players who won this tournament before, achieved great things afterwards. I hope I can join them and I hope this is the start of a long career. I’m not sure how it has impacted on Norway. But I hope a lot of people have followed me. I hope this is the beginning of something big there and I want to be an inspiration to the children who play tennis in my country,” said the champion, trophy in hand.
In doubles, Horacio Zeballos and Spaniard Marcel Granollers defeated Guillermo Duran and Juan Ignacio Londero 6-4, 5-7 (18-16), and thus won their first title here as a couple, although it’s not the first time they’ve done so. Zeballos is the maximum winner in the couples’ discipline, with four titles achieved with different partners, such as Sebastian Prieto (2010), Andres Molteni (2018) and Maximo Gonzalez (2019). For Granollers it was the third crown, first with an Argentinean couple.
Horacio Zeballos: “It was a madness, a terrible battle. We started playing very well and got a little tense. Anyway, the four of us played a great game.
Marcel Granollers: “We played a very good set and a half. We closed it, but in the doubles, when they recover the rest, a lot is equaled. It’s a format with no margin for error. But we held out until the end.
