Two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz will defend his title at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2024

At 20 years old, he already has 12 titles to his name, including Wimbledon and the US Open, in addition to being the youngest number one in the history of the  ATP rankings

Carlos Alcaraz confirms his participation in the next edition of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell – 71st Trofeo Conde de Godó, which will be held on the courts of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899 from April 13 to 21. Because of this, the current number two in world tennis will defend the title he won last year in a historic final against the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. Alcaraz, winner in Barcelona in 2022 and 2023, is the second tennis player confirmed for the 2024 tournament and joins Rafa Nadal, who already secured his participation at the end of December.

At 20 years old, trained by Juan Carlos Ferrero, the Murcian completed a brilliant 2023 season that led him to regain number one in the ATP ranking up to three times. Alcaraz played a total of 17 tournaments and won six titles (out of eight finals played), the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, Wimbledon, the Masters 1,000 of Indian Wells and Mutua Madrid Open, the ATP 500 of Queen’s and the ATP 250 of Buenos Aires. Alcaraz confirmed that he has such a powerful game that he is capable of dominating on all surfaces.

Alcaraz confirmed his ability to dominate on all surfaces thanks to his powerful game.

Carlos Alcaraz is very pleased to play the tournament again. “I am very happy to play in Barcelona again and fight to win my third title,” he said. “It is a very special tournament for me, with a lot of history and it is played on courts that I know very well since I was little. Also, having all the love of the people in the stands makes it even more emotional.”

For his part, David Ferrer, sports director of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, is thrilled about the participation of the Murcian tennis player. “Carlos Alcaraz is a unique player, with a lot of charisma and who also has fun on the court. He has exceptional conditions to be able to dominate the point against any opponent and that makes him different from any other player. And we are talking about the youngest tennis player in history to be number one in the world. He still has a whole career ahead of him to continue improving and developing as a player. He will be the great dominator of the circuit for the next ten years, without a doubt,” says Ferrer. In recent years, the Barcelona tournament has served as a stepping-stone to discover emerging stars such as the Murcian, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who staged the finals played in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Barcelona, a court that he knows very well

Carlos Alcaraz debuted for the first time on the RCTB-1899 courts when he was 11 years old and, since then, he has played numerous times until becoming a professional tennis player. Despite his youth, Alcaraz has many years of experience on the clay of Barcelona and that makes him a very difficult player to beat. In 2019, at the age of 15, he made his first appearance at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell thanks to a wildcard from the organization. He played in the qualifying round and lost in his debut to the Portuguese Pedro Sousa. In 2021 he debuted for the first time in the main draw at the age of 17, losing in the first round to the American Frances Tiafoe. In 2022, in his second participation in the main draw in Barcelona, he won the title after beating his training partner Pablo Carreño 6-3, 6-2 in the final. Last year, Alcaraz achieved his second title after defeating Nuno Borges, Roberto Bautista, Alejandro Davidovich, Daniel Evans and Stefanos Tsitsipas (6-3, 6-4).
