A star is born: Rune wins the Paris Masters 1000

Tennium player Holger Rune has won his first Masters 1000 title in Paris. The 19-year-old Dane lifted the title after beating Novak Djokovic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in 2h14.

The new champion reached this final by defeating Stan Wawrinka, Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev, Carlos Alcaraz (by retirement) and Felix Auger-Aliassime, claiming the title of being the first tennis player to defeat five of the world’s top ten in the same tournament.

You deserve this victory, what an amazing week. I’m not happy that you beat me, but I’m happy for you, because I like your personality. I think you’re a very dedicated guy, who loves tennis and puts in a lot of hours of hard work. And you’ve been rewarded. You and your team have a bright future, congratulations,” Djokovic told the winner. “You’re one of my favourite players, I’ve watched you since I was little and trained with you, it’s a pleasure to share the court with you now,” Holger replied.

Rune breaks into the top-10 and is the youngest champion of the French event since Boris Becker (18-years-old in 1986). His rise to No. 10 makes him the top seed for the ATP Finals in Turin and he is the hot favourite for the NextGen ATP Finals in Milan.
